Growing Through Athletics at Evansville Day School
At Evansville Day School, athletics are about so much more than competition. They are an important part of the student experience and an extension of our mission to develop the whole child — mind, body, and spirit. From our youngest learners to our varsity athletes, students are encouraged to grow in confidence, teamwork, leadership, and resilience through meaningful athletic opportunities designed to meet them where they are.
One of the unique aspects of athletics at EDS is that opportunities begin early. Even our preschool students can start exploring school spirit and athletic participation through activities like cheer clinics. By kindergarten, students have access to programs such as Running Club, a variety of sports camps and clinics, and auxiliary programming that helps build foundational skills and confidence in a fun, age-appropriate environment.
As students grow, so do the opportunities available to them. Beginning in third grade, students can participate in organized school sports, with additional programs opening throughout Middle School and High School. EDS currently offers opportunities in cheer, track and field, tennis, cross country, soccer, basketball, and archery, along with clinics, camps, clubs, and other school-administered activities that encourage students to stay active and engaged.
Our athletic programs are intentionally designed to grow with students over time. Whether a child is trying a sport for the very first time or competing at the varsity level, our focus remains the same: skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, school pride, and a lifelong love of athletics.
At EDS, we believe participation matters. That belief is reflected in our no-cut philosophy, which ensures that students who want to be involved have the opportunity to do so regardless of previous experience or ability level. We are proud to create an environment where students feel welcomed, supported, and encouraged to challenge themselves.
At the same time, participation comes with responsibility. Student-athletes are expected to demonstrate commitment, accountability, effort, and respect for coaches, teammates, and the program. These expectations help students learn valuable life skills that extend far beyond athletics.
Our athletic philosophy centers on personal growth, character development, and physical well-being. Success is not measured solely by wins and losses, but by a student’s willingness to give their best effort, support their teammates, and grow through both challenges and accomplishments. Through athletics, students learn perseverance, leadership, discipline, and integrity — qualities that serve them well in every area of life.
As a member of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), Evansville Day School adheres to high standards for safety, sportsmanship, and fair play. Our coaches and staff are committed to providing a positive and supportive environment where all students can thrive.
At Evansville Day School, there truly is a place for everyone in athletics. Whether cheering on classmates, participating in a club, learning a new skill at camp, working as a team manager or representing the Eagles in competition, our students are building memories, confidence, friendships, and character that will last a lifetime.
Athletics at EDS are about more than just opportunities to compete — they are opportunities for students to grow as leaders, mentors, and role models within the school community.
As students move through our programs, many take on leadership roles by helping host camps, clinics, clubs, and training opportunities for younger athletes. Older students often assist coaches, mentor younger teammates, and in some cases serve as team managers or student coaches. These experiences help students develop confidence, communication skills, responsibility, and leadership while strengthening the connections across grade levels that make the EDS community so unique.
We also recognize that athletic passion and talent extend beyond the sports offered on campus. Evansville Day School proudly supports student-athletes who compete both within and outside of EDS in activities such as figure skating, equestrian sports, dance, gymnastics, martial arts, swimming, and more. Our students demonstrate remarkable dedication as they balance academics with training, travel, and competition schedules, and we celebrate their accomplishments wherever they compete.
For some students, athletics continue well beyond high school. EDS is proud to support student-athletes as they pursue opportunities to compete at the collegiate level and beyond. Whether a student’s athletic journey leads to varsity competition, club participation, coaching, leadership, or simply a lifelong love of staying active, our goal remains the same: to help students build character, confidence, discipline, and meaningful experiences that will serve them throughout their lives.
At Evansville Day School, athletics are not just programs, they are an extension of our commitment to developing well-rounded students who lead, serve, and grow both on and off the field.
