Larry Grimes Heart Award

Larry “Doc” Grimes was the kind of teacher students never forget. During his time at Evansville Day School from 1976 to 1983, Doc wore many hats—literally and figuratively. He taught, coached, counseled, mentored, and advised with humility and humor. Whether on the basketball court, yearbook team, or in the classroom, Doc approached every role with passion and compassion.

Outside of school, he served as a firefighter and ultimately Chief of the Newburgh Volunteer Fire Department. After his time at EDS, he earned a law degree and returned to the Evansville community to practice law. On the day before his untimely passing, he was elected Judge of the Warrick County Circuit Court. Doc lived a life of deep commitment to others—and left behind a legacy of integrity, kindness, and quiet strength.

To honor that legacy, the Evansville Day School Alumni Association has established the Larry Grimes Heart Award, an endowed annual award recognizing a current EDS teacher who goes the extra mile—supporting students not just academically, but personally and wholeheartedly.

Each spring, a teacher is selected to receive a $1,000 award at Commencement. The honoree is chosen based on nominations from students and parents who have witnessed a faculty member making a meaningful difference beyond the classroom.

We believe teachers are the heart and soul of Day School. This award recognizes those who exemplify the spirit that Doc brought to his work every day.

Your gift helps ensure that the Larry Grimes Heart Award continues to inspire and support our educators for years to come.
