Traditions that Bind Us Together

Traditions are at the heart of the Day School community. While every student’s journey is unique, these annual events create lasting connections across grade levels and celebrate the bonds that make us who we are. Whether it’s cheering on seniors, enjoying a Thanksgiving feast together, or competing in spirited games on Field Day, our traditions unite us in meaningful ways, shaping memories that last a lifetime.

Gnome Night

Each fall, Primary School students take part in a magical evening in the school’s 40-acre woods during Gnome Night—an interactive, Gnome-themed production created by Upper School students. Middle School students guide the younger children from scene to scene, fostering meaningful connections across grade levels. Along the trails, Primary students’ original artwork is displayed, transforming the woods into an immersive celebration of art, nature, and imagination through light, sound, and movement. Gnome Night is a beloved tradition that brings the entire EDS community together for an unforgettable evening.

All-School Picnic

The All-School Picnic kicks off the new academic year by bringing the Day School community together for a fun-filled afternoon. Campus comes alive with games, booths, and activities for all ages. Primary School students rotate through stations led by Upper School students, enjoying friendly competitions, face painting, and sweet treats. This family-centered tradition sets a joyful, welcoming tone for the year ahead.

Thanksgiving Feast

Before Thanksgiving break, students, faculty, and families gather in the gym to share a festive meal. Upper School students assist JPK students, while parents serve the food, creating a meaningful experience rooted in service and connection. The Thanksgiving Feast is a cherished tradition that celebrates gratitude and community before the holiday.

T-Shirt Exchange

At the start of each school year, the oldest and youngest students in the school take part in the T-Shirt Exchange. The oldest boy and girl exchange shirts with the youngest boy and girl, symbolizing the journey ahead for our youngest learners and the growth that awaits them at EDS. This simple yet powerful tradition highlights the lasting connections formed across generations at Day School.

Field Day

As the school year comes to a close and seniors begin their senior projects, the rest of the school celebrates with Field Day. Students of all ages participate in spirited games such as kickball, football, and dodgeball, cheering one another on throughout the day. Field Day is a joyful celebration of teamwork, school spirit, and the accomplishments of the year.

Senior Walk

The Senior Walk marks a meaningful milestone as seniors prepare to graduate. Cheered on by the entire student body, seniors walk through the Upper, Middle, and Primary Schools, past the hill, and to the sculpture for their final photos. This emotional tradition honors their growth, leadership, and lasting impact on the EDS community.

Senior Send-Off

Before graduation, the Upper School gathers to celebrate the seniors during the Senior Send-Off. Each senior presents a gift to underclassmen and faculty as a token of appreciation for the support and guidance they’ve received. This tradition reflects the gratitude, respect, and strong sense of community that define life at Evansville Day School.
