Key Moments in EDS History

Rooted in Vision, Driven by Passion

Evansville Day School’s story began in 1946, sparked by the vision of a young educator, Esther Baumgart, and a small group of colleagues who believed in a different kind of education—one centered on curiosity, independence, and a deep relationship between students and teachers. What started as Evansville Preschool Inc., with just seven students in the basement of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, would grow into the premier independent school in Southwest Indiana.

Mrs. Baumgart, the school’s first and longest-serving teacher, shaped generations of students with her dedication to individualized learning. Her influence remains woven into the fabric of EDS, memorialized through the Baumgart House, one of the school’s four houses that symbolize community and leadership.

A School Evolves: Growth and Transformation

Igleheart house on Sunset Avenue and became Evansville Day School, marking a pivotal transition into a fully independent institution. With this move came an expansion beyond preschool, incorporating primary grades and appointing J.B. Davis as the first headmaster.

Recognizing the need for a more comprehensive educational journey, EDS introduced high school grades in 1961. Just four years later, in 1965, the first graduating senior class walked across the stage—seven students who all went on to college, setting a precedent for academic excellence.

By 1968, growth and ambition led EDS to its current North Green River Road campus. The move provided students with modern classrooms, science labs, a library, and a sprawling wooded campus for outdoor learning—an environment that still fosters curiosity and discovery today.

Milestones That Shaped EDS

Over the decades, Evansville Day School has remained at the forefront of progressive education. Key moments in its history include:

  • 1959: The Opportunity Shop Opens – A nonprofit consignment store created to support school improvements and financial aid.
  • 1982: Lower School Expansion – Six new classrooms were added, creating distinct learning spaces for younger students.
  • 1984: Upper School Wing Opens – The Upper School found its permanent home, complete with the beloved Commons area.
  • 1990s: Intersession Introduced – A pioneering program emphasizing experiential learning and hands-on exploration.
  • 2012: The Traylor Atrium – A major capital campaign resulted in new renovations and expanded facilities.
  • 2015: Sieboldt iLab – A space dedicated to 21st-century experiential education, reinforcing EDS’s commitment to innovation.

A Tradition of Excellence, A Future of Possibilities

From its humble beginnings to its role today as a nationally ranked independent school, Evansville Day School has upheld a commitment to student-centered learning, academic excellence, and whole-child education. While the facilities have evolved, the heart of EDS remains the same—a school where every child is seen, heard, and supported.

If our founders could walk through our halls today, they would recognize the same passion and vision that ignited EDS in 1946. Their legacy lives on in our students’ bold ideas, our faculty’s dedication, and the lifelong impact of an EDS education.
