Evansville Day School Expands Athletic Leadership as Program Continues to Grow

Evansville Day School’s athletic program continues to experience significant growth, with expanded team offerings, increased participation and new opportunities for students across grade levels. To support that continued growth, Evansville Day School has promoted Trey Wornica to Assistant Athletic Director, adding leadership capacity to an increasingly comprehensive athletic program.

The growth of EDS athletics has been led by Athletic Director Sarah Brooks, whose work has helped expand both the size and scope of the program. With the support of coaches, faculty, staff and auxiliary program leaders, EDS has created more opportunities for students to discover athletics, develop fundamental skills, compete and find a place to participate.

Today, Evansville Day School is an Under Armour school, reflecting the school’s continued investment in its athletic program. Participation has also grown substantially, with EDS athletics reaching participation levels that exceed the national average when measured against the size of the school’s student body.

That growth can be seen across nearly every area of the program. At the high school level, EDS has expanded opportunities for female athletes through the addition of a dedicated varsity girls team. Basketball participation has continued to increase, allowing the school to offer more age-specific teams and divisions. Cheer has developed into a large and active program, while archery has expanded significantly and recently reached a milestone by hosting its own home tournament.

In tennis, increased participation on the high school girls team allowed EDS to field both varsity and junior varsity matches last season. Cross country and track have also experienced growing participation among student-athletes.

The growth extends beyond traditional school teams. EDS has continued to develop clinics, camps and auxiliary athletic programming that introduce younger students to sports, help them build fundamental skills and provide accessible entry points into athletics. Meredith Dougherty and Tia Rogers have played an important role in expanding these opportunities, helping create additional ways for students to get involved in athletics and connect introductory experiences with the school’s competitive programs.

These developmental opportunities, combined with EDS’s commitment to no-cut athletic policies, help make athletics accessible to students with a wide range of interests and experience levels. Whether a student discovers a sport through a camp or clinic or joins a competitive team, the goal is to provide opportunities for students to develop skills, build confidence and experience being part of a team.

As the number of teams, athletes, coaches, events and programming opportunities has increased, so has the need for additional organizational and administrative support. Wornica’s promotion to Assistant Athletic Director represents a natural next step in supporting that growth.

Wornica brings experience as both a coach and physical education teacher, along with a strong understanding of EDS students and the school’s athletic philosophy. Through his work with the Summer Academy, auxiliary programming, clubs and team sports in physical education, he has worked with students across multiple age groups and athletic experiences.

In his new role, Wornica will oversee middle school athletic offerings and support the day-to-day operation and continued development of the program. He will work closely with Brooks, coaches and faculty to strengthen middle school athletics and create a connected experience for students as they progress through the EDS athletic program.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to help continue building athletics at EDS,” Wornica said. “There are so many opportunities for students to get involved, and I look forward to helping create an environment where students can develop their skills, build confidence and enjoy being part of a team.”

The continued growth of EDS athletics reflects a broader commitment to providing students with opportunities to challenge themselves, develop discipline and teamwork, build relationships and experience the benefits of being part of something larger than themselves.

With expanded teams, developmental programming, camps and clinics, no-cut policies and continued investment in athletic leadership, Evansville Day School is building an athletic program designed to serve students at every stage of development.

As the program continues to grow, EDS remains focused on creating more opportunities for students to discover their interests, develop their abilities and find their place in athletics.
