Primary School Science

eds primary school science

The Primary School Science program is based on the proposition that elementary students learn science best by doing science.  Teachers and students work through the scientific method together by engaging in enduring experiences that lead to deeper understanding of the natural world.

Day School students have access to a learning environment where the processes used by scientists are introduced organically, through age-appropriate interactions.  During the Pre-School years, science concepts are integrated into thematic units within their home classroom. Beginning in Kindergarten, students experience science instruction in the PS Science Lab with a science specialist.  Our science labs rely on a bedrock process of scientific inquiry: asking questions, making observations, predicting, identifying what is known, carrying out investigations, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions.

For students throughout the Primary School, our science curriculum emphasizes hands-on study coordinated to support and enhance topics covered in other classrooms at that grade level.  Specific units include the study of life, the earth, physical sciences, and space and technology.
