The Primary School emphasizes its literacy program throughout the curriculum, as we at Evansville Day School believe that successful reading and fluid writing are necessary academic components that enrich the love of learning in every student.
Whenever possible, reading and writing are integrated into other content areas. This interdisciplinary approach offers opportunities to write for a variety of purposes including drafting personal narratives, comparing and contrasting, persuading, gathering information for reports, creating stories and poems, and writing in journals.
Our students learn to read through a balanced literacy approach that includes phonics and whole language. They are encouraged to seek independence as emerging readers and to seek answers to their questions. By learning at an early age to apply correct grammar and select the perfect word for any given situation, we prepare our students to be confident, resourceful writers for life.
