Culture, history and communication are integrated into the Middle School French and Spanish classes. Students may find themselves visiting a French-speaking baker from the Ivory Coast, or ordering a meal in Spanish at a local restaurant; they may enjoy King Cake and crepes on Mardi Gras, or quesadillas on Cinco de Mayo. In all such cases, special attention is given to these events’ historical and cultural significance.
All fifth graders study French. At the end of this year they may choose to continue their study in French or explore Spanish to focus on through Grade Eight. Each student is encouraged to speak the target language and pursue proficiency outside the classroom through travel, music and film. Students are encouraged to consider learning both French and Spanish once in the Upper School.
